I love the well-done animal books for kids by this author. This book is so beautiful because the subject’s subspecies are so colorful and a genuine delight if you get to witness them in nature. This book is filled with gorgeous, brilliantly colorful photographs of a variety of hummingbirds in action. How nice that a camera can catch hummingbirds mid flap so we can truly appreciate their beauty. This book has all kinds of information about hummingbirds, from subspecies to courting rituals to bringing up baby hummingbirds. Many photos are full page with fun facts on them. I like how this author always includes a section on the threats to the particular animal the book is about and what the reader can do. For hummingbirds, a child can actually do a lot, like helping create and maintain a hummingbird-friendly garden or natural space. The author does an excellent job of explaining what could be complex topics and provides good explanations of words when needed. The book could easily be read by any child eight years old or older, though it certainly could be read to younger children. The author does so in an engaging style so that a parent or caregiver could enjoy the read as well. If you have or know a child who likes animals, including birds, she or he will probably enjoy this beautiful hummingbird book. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
