I so enjoy the ultimate animal books for kids by this Australian author and zookeeper! I love all the interesting facts she is able to dig up, but my favorite part of her books is the variety of photographs she's found of her subjects. Seeing animals in their natural habitats at work and play really makes the book come alive. This book about elephants first talks about the three different species—yes, three!—of elephants, two African ones (bush and forest) and an Indian one. All are endangered, unfortunately. The bulk of the book is a large section of elephant facts. Did you know the elephant is the only mammal that cannot jump? That elephant pregnancies last nearly 2 years and the baby can way up to 165 pounds (thank goodness twins are rare!!)? That an elephant skin is one inch thick? Though they are large… that their hearts beat at an average rate of 27 beats/minute (not a sustainable rate compatible with human life!)? After the fact section is a brief chapter on how elephants are endangered by climate change and human interference (poaching and expansion into their territory. A 20-question quiz and word search follow this. The book’s photographs and facts are so interesting that this book is enjoyable for a parent or caregiver to share with a child who loves animals in general or elephants in particular.
